If you've been in China long enough, you've probably noticed that special hand gestures are used to express the numbers from one to ten. Why is that? China has many different dialects and sometimes it can be confusing for people from different regions to understand one another. Furthermore, a lot of words sound very similar in Chinese. For example the word for the number four, si , sounds very similar to ten, shi.

The aims of this study were to develop and validate an instrument to quantitatively assess the handedness of basketballers in basketball tasks Basketball Handedness Inventory, BaHI and to compare it with their handedness in daily activities by the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory EHI. The participants were basketballers and 40 controls. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor model. Our findings suggest that professional training induces handedness changes in basketball tasks. The BaHI provides a valid and reliable measure of the skilled hand in basketball. This will allow coaches to assess mastery of the ball according to the hand used by the athlete in the different tasks and roles.

Hand Preference and Performance in Basketball Tasks

Not to be confused with the second rule of dropping your food on the floor, the basketball 5 count is an important rule that denies the offense from holding the ball and stalling. There are actually two different variations of the offensive 5-second violation. Both serve similar functions of forcing the offense to make moves with the ball. Essentially a count is started when a ball-handler does one of the following: holds the ball; dribbles the ball; or post-ups, back to the basket.

A shot clock is a countdown timer used in basketball that provides a set amount of time 24—35 seconds, depending on the league that a team may possess the ball before attempting to score a field goal. It is distinct from the game clock, which displays the time remaining in the period of play. It may be colloquially known as the second clock , particularly in the NBA and other leagues where that is the duration of the shot clock. If the shot clock reaches zero before the team attempts a field goal, the team has committed a shot clock violation, which is penalized with a loss of possession. At most professional and collegiate basketball courts the shot clock is displayed to the players and spectators in large red numerals below the game clock on a display mounted atop each backboard.
