Acral lick dermatitis ALD can be a very frustrating challenge for the small animal practitioner. The purpose of this lecture is to present some tips that I have found useful in the management of acral lick dermatitis. Fungal Pythium , phaeohyphomycosis, Blastomyces , etc. Prevention of further damage and treatment of secondary infection are the two most critical factors determining treatment success or failure. Physical intervention to prevent self-trauma will be required initially, although adjunctive medications see below may make the job easier. The most commonly used method is an Elizabethan collar, although the animal must be observed to make sure that they cannot reach around the collar or scrape the leg on the collar edge. Collars can be extended by taping X-ray film or sections of another collar to the edges.

Acral lick dermatitis is a firm, raised, ulcerative, or thickened plaque usually located on the back side of the ankle, or between the toes. The age at which it occurs in cats varies with the cause. Some veterinarians believe it may more commonly affect males, while others indicate there is no predisposition.

A lick granuloma , also known as acral lick dermatitis , is a skin disorder found most commonly in dogs , but also in cats. In dogs, it results typically from the dog's urge to lick the lower portion of one of their legs. The lesion can initially be red, swollen, irritated, and bleeding, similar to a hot spot wet eczema. The animal's incessant licking of the lesion eventually results in a thickened, firm, oval plaque , which is the granuloma. A major cause of lick granuloma appears to be psychological, related to stress, anxiety, separation anxiety , boredom, or compulsiveness.
